High nitrate levels can encourage excessive algae growth, which can make the aquarium look unsightly. Unlike other nitrate reducing products, which need regular recharging and replacing, Tetra NitrateMinus is simply added weekly to the aquarium. Also unlike many ordinary nitrate reducing products, NitrateMinus does not need to be added to a filter system to work, but is simply added straight to the water.
How it Works:
NitrateMinus utilises a natural biological process called denitrification to remove nitrate. Under conditions of low oxygen, such as are found under the gravel in most aquariums, special bacteria use nitrate instead of oxygen to break down the NitrateMinus granules. By doing so, they steadily reduce existing nitrate levels, and maintain a permanently low level. In addition to removing nitrates, NitrateMinus also releases a low level of carbonates into the water, which helps to stabilise the pH of the water.
How to Use:
Simply add 2.5ml/10 litres of NitrateMinus to the aquarium once a week to keep nitrate levels low. NitrateMinus must be in an oxygen poor environment to work. The effectiveness of NitrateMinus may therefore be reduced in aquariums with undergravel filters.

Very good and effective Review by Chris
Satisfaction Quality Value Price I have used this product for a while now and it is proving to be very effective in control the algae in my tank. It does take a few weeks to start control the algae levels which is okay. Overall a very good product priced at a reasonable price. (Posted on 30/12/2011)

Works great, but watch your maintenance programme Review by Kieron
Satisfaction Quality Value Price I've been using this product for over 6-months, in the absense of a suitable alternative (for example, i don't use an external filter and so i can't use nitrate removers associated with these). My tap water has measureable quantities of nitrates and so i'm up against it in terms of keeping my water quality where I (and my Cardinals) would like it!
Anyway, i've found that this product really does work - i've notice significant decreases in algae growth and measured nitrate concentrations (I do a routine weekly 15% water change but nothing else to otherwise impact nitrate levels).
It did seem to take a few weeks to really start making a difference but partly because - and here's the catch - when i do my routine cleaning i 'hoover' the gravel, which also removes the Nitrate minus granules that settle into your gravel. You DO have to watch this i think, or you'll just be pouring your treatment away with your water change!
I have a 90 litre tank with some 30 fish in it, and so one 250ml bottle lasts me ~ 12 weeks. I suppose that's ok, but sometimes feels expensive. (Posted on 16/12/2011)
